Important Questions Before Hiring a Roofer

ask questions to ask roofing contractor jobs

Hiring a roofer isn’t as easy as checking Google and contacting the first company that shows up. You want to be sure that you’re working with experienced, honest, professionals. Your money and your property are both at risk from dishonest contractors who perform substandard work.

We’ve put together a list of important questions to ask a roofer before you hire them.

Do you have the necessary experience and licenses?

Anyone working on your home should be fully qualified and licensed to do so. Before hiring a roofing contractor, ask them to provide evidence of this. If they refuse to do so or give you an excuse, this is a red flag.

Do you have sufficient insurance?

All contractors should have the right insurance to carry out the job at hand. It will give you peace of mind should anything go wrong with the job and cause damage to your property. Additionally, if someone who is working on your property is injured, and they aren’t insured through their company, then they could potentially sue you for damages.

Can you provide a detailed quote?

It’s perfectly reasonable to want to know the full cost before the job is done. One of the most important questions to ask a roofing contractor is their quotation policy. Ask them to outline what the quote includes and what it doesn’t. You don’t suddenly want an unexpected bill that is much higher than the initial quote.

How can you be contacted for hire?

In order to ensure you’re working with a trustworthy roofer, you need to be able to contact them in a number of ways. If they’re only providing a PO Box or email, then this could mean that you can’t get in touch should they decide to disappear without finishing the job. A physical office address and phone number should be provided.

Will you be using subcontractors for jobs?

It’s all very well doing your due diligence on a roofing contractor but if they then subcontract the work, then you’re back to square one, not knowing the right information about them.

Who will be project managing?

Who will be responsible for overseeing the work? You need to know who to talk to if you have questions or concerns.

What type of warranty is offered?

If something goes wrong after the work is completed, you don’t want to be paying for it again. Whether it’s an unavoidable issue or poor work, you need to know how long the work is insured for and your rights to have it corrected.

Can I talk to previous customers before hiring?

If you’re hiring a roofer for a large project, then you’re going to want proof of their existing good work. That is why important questions to ask a roofer include evidence of completed projects and the chance to talk with one or two of their previous clients.
